As an institution of higher learning Fontys is therefore committed to academic excellence and innovation in research both at under graduate and post graduate levels.

The first international project Fontys International Health Projects initiated was in 1996 in Kenya with short courses in ultrasound. Following the success of this pilot project the rapid growth of similar activities was clearly demonstrated.

Courses in diagnostic radiography and ultrasound have since been implemented in many countries including Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia with extensive involvement of local expertise and resources.

After the initial focus being Medical Imaging, it became quite clear that other areas in the health sector could benefit from Fontys’ expertise. Fontys International Health Projects has developed a comprehensive resource network resulting in a wealth of experience in an extensive range of programmes.

Nursing courses are now playing a dominant role in the range of courses Fontys International Health Projects can offer, closely followed by Bio Medical Engineering, Physiotherapy, Speech, Language and Hearing Therapy, Hospital Waste Management and Orthopaedic Techniques.

Eduardo Mondlane University

The Eduardo Mondlane University was founded in 1962, as Mozambique University of General Studies. The name later changed to Universidade Lourenço Marques and after independence in 1975 it became the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM).

For many years the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane was the only higher educational institution in the country. Due to the huge need of qualified graduates in all fields, the first years of the Universities existence concentrated on the development of teacher training to fulfill the demand.

Today there are 10 different faculties that cover a variety of courses including medicine, agriculture, engineering, science, law, economics and four superior schools, such as the superior school of rural development in Vilanculos.

UEM is the largest public University in Mozambique with more than 14.000 students and a guarantee of equal access to students from all regions in Mozambique, as well as promoting the increased registration of female students.

Since the beginning of 2008 the University has initiated a curriculum reform process for all of its courses, using participative learning methods, with the aim to make them more applied to the needs of the country. The Medical School is the first faculty to introduce this new learning methodology which includes a Bachelor and Masters programme. Following this trend will result in the higher educational system of Mozambique becoming integrated into the Southern African region.
