The programme has duration of four years. The course is divided into sixteen "module" periods (= 4 periods per year) and each period lasts 9 weeks. Every last week of the period is reserved for tests (examinations). The study year lasts in total 40 weeks. Every module you will receive instruction in various practical and theoretical subjects. In the first year most facets of the profession of physiotherapist are discussed.
The objectives of the study programme are to gain the knowledge, and skills of Physiotherapy, and to reach a certain level of personal development. This allows you to practise as an independent professional, with a general versatility, after graduation.
The first teaching week is a theme week on Introduction to Physiotherapy, in which you are introduced tothe educational system, the teachers, (senior) students, the study manuals and study tasks. All this will givey ou a reasonable idea of the study programme and the profession of physiotherapist.
Starting from the first week you will have, on average, about 15 till 20 hours of theory and/or practical classes. The rest of the week is filled with practising independently or working on study tasks in small groups. This teaching method requires a lot of self-discipline. However there will be good supervision from your tutor. You have to reckon with about 20 hours per week of individual studies. In the second and third year you will go deeper into the profession of physiotherapist. A total of almost one year of the study programme is to be spent on doing clinical affiliation and a thesis project. After completing your course successfully you are allowed to call yourself a physiotherapist. The education is offered in modules. In each module a part of the body e.g. knee/hip is accentuated. In every module all the relevant subjects for this module will be taught such as:
At Fontys we care for our students. We want you to feel at home even though you are far away from home. The relationship between professors and students is open and on a first name basis. Because of the relatively small size of the English Stream programme everybody knows each other. Being in touch with senior students is helpful and fun. Read more about our student care.
The Objectives
The objectives of the study programme are to gain the knowledge, (insight understanding) and skills of Physiotherapy, and to reach a certain level of personal development. This allows you to practise as an independent professional, with a general versatility, after graduation. This means that upon graduation as a physiotherapist you have a whole lot of professional and personal skills. Among other things, you will be able:
To carry out a patient assessment;
To determine whether physiotherapy for this patient is indicated or not;
To interpret the assessment outcomes and use them to set up a treatment plan;
To carry out a treatment by using the diverse physiotherapy means;
To evaluate (the effect of) the treatment and the treatment plan and adjust it if necessary;
To carry out physiotherapy treatment for prevention, care and after care;
To be critical on your own behaviour as a professional and as a person in the relationship with your patients;
to make a report about your physiotherapy findings for practitioners of allied professions;
to co-operate with colleagues and other practitioners in the health care system.
These examples of so called start qualifications will give you an appropriate basis to work as a physiotherapist in all kinds of clinical settings, such as in a hospital, a rehabilitation centre, a nursing home or a private/outpatient clinic.
Location and time schedule
All classes are taught at Fontys University of Professional Education inEindhoven, Ds. Th. Fliednerstraat 2.
Classes are scheduled between 09.00 a.m. until 17.15 p.m. Breaks between classes can be used to practise or study in the library of the building. The academic year starts in the last week of August. The summer vacation begins in the first week of July.
Clinical affiliation
Since the school thinks that it is very important that the student as soon as possible gets an impression about the workfield, you will do a couple of short orientations (1-4 weeks) during the first and the second year. These clinical affiliations mainly serve as self-reflection and as a first introduction to the future profession.
In the fourth year, the clinical affiliations become more extensive. You will go to two different facilities where you will gain practical experience. Each clinical affiliation has a duration of 15 weeks. During your clinical affiliation you are supervised both by your clinical instructor of the facility and (on distance) by the supervisor of the school. After the clinical affiliation you work for about three months full-time on completion of the thesis project, which is the final part of the programme. The programme has developed a co-operation with a large number of clinical facilities in several countries. This often gives you the chance to carry out these periods in your own country and in your own environment. To decrease travel expenses to your home country, the clinical affiliations are connected to the vacations. The school highly values a good contact with the students during these periods and therefore tries to visit every student during one of the clinical affiliation periods to discuss the study progress and to get a better impression about the facility.
Degree
After successfully completing the educational programme you will be awarded a Bachelor degree of Health in Physiotherapy.
